Bill Hielscher began drag racing with a '53 Oldsmobile in 1955, when he was 19 years old. He was a formidable "weekend warrior" for 11 years before joining the ranks of professional drag racing in 1966. With major sponsorship from the Bardahl Company, a manufacturer of automotive lubricants, Bill quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in AHRA (American Hot Rod Association) competition. At the close of his professional career, which only lasted a relatively short 6-1/2 years, Bill had won 37 major AHRA championship races, nine of them in one year, and had been crowned AHRA World Champion seven times! The most famous of Bill's Camaro duo was the one equipped with a dual-quad 427 and 4-speed transmision.
