Refurbishing Tail Lamp Housings

Starting Point

If your housings are not damaged, but have lost their lusture, you can refinish them with a little effort.

Disassembly

Turn housing over and remove six sheet metal bolts or screws that hold the front of the housing to the back.

Separate Halves

The halves should separate easily, and if you are careful you can probably save the gasket.

Disassemble Lens

Pull Lenses apart and at this time you can clean all the parts and determine if you need to replaces gaskets and lenses.

Mask Housing

After the housing is clean and completely dry use 3-M Safe-Release Painter's Tape as it will be easy to remove. An exacto knife is helpful for triming corners.

Complete Masking

You should mask both the inner raised edge and the outer smooth surface, leaving only the textured area to paint. Make sure it is clean.

Painting

Use a high quality aerosol paint making sure to use a Satin Black finish. Several light coats should be applied about ½ hour apart.

Remove Tape

After drying thoroughly overnight, remove the masking tape. Any bleeding under the edges of the tape can be cleaned up with the exacto knife.

Polish Housing

Polish the unpainted portion of the housing with a metal polish such as Mother's. Be careful not to rub your new paint off.

Reassemble

Reassemble the housing replacing any parts that you need to. The finished unit looks good as new.

Finished

Both units are done and the savings adds up to about $175 over the purchase of reproduction units.
